One of the ‘Leave no Trace’ principles Deerfooters practice when out on the trail is utilizing ‘durable surfaces’ wherever possible. For example, it’s better to step on a rock surface instead of a dirt surface in order to minimize erosion on a trail. The logic is easy to follow. Rocks are durable and erode slowly. Dirt, however, breaks down quickly, washes away in the storms, leaving erosion gaps.

Jesus taught this very principle when describing the house built on the solid foundation (Matthew 7:24). When the storm came (and be sure of this: storms always come), only the house with a solid foundation survived.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a storm of sorts, and a big one. Reading the headlines today will fuel fear and anxiety in any reasonable person. This is time to shore up your foundation. What is the foundation Jesus had in mind?  A firm faith standing on His Word. Right now, it is a steady spiritual confidence that there is more to the pandemic story than what the headlines tell. God is in that story and His purposes are not threatened by the virus.

Men of God, it is important to believe and stand on the durable truth that God is at work even in the midst of the storm. He is not in crisis. The world may erode, but His promises do not. Bank on that.

As we are all paying attention to public health concerns (rightfully so), I urge you to also pay attention to the health of your soul. Spend as much time in the Word of God as you do in the news, or binge watching your favorite shows. The Word of God is the durable surface you need.

If you are looking for a place to begin, I would suggest spending time in 2 Corinthians 4. Pay particular attention to verses 16-18.
